St Martin-in-the-Fields

Trafalgar Square, London

Brief:

To design and install temporary banner systems to encourage fund raising needed to carry out the £36 million historic restoration of one of London's most famous churches.

The specifications:

Archers was asked to produce and hang banners between the portico columns of the 800-year-old church on London's Trafalgar Square.

The issues:

The banners needed to be installed without using permanent fixings into the precious stonework, but at the same time needed to withstand the test of London's weather in one of its most exposed areas. A major issue with the project was obtaining access to the site that has with one of the heaviest pedestrian traffic in London. The site was also still open to the public and congregation that made safety paramount when working overhead.

The solution:

Archers engineered metal collars with protective rubber inserts to clamp tightly around the building's columns. Fixing points for the cables were welded to either side of the collars.

The banners, themselves, were produced from a strong mesh PVC in order to reduce wind resistance. Webbing-based tensioning systems were then welded into the top and bottom of each banner. These allowed the tension to be adjusted over time, ensuring the 4 banners were always at the same height.

The overall access issues were overcome by erecting a scaffold shield around the entire portico area. This gave Archers the ability to work throughout the day with complete safety protection to our installation team and to the general public.

The outcome:

The final result was quick, effective and on budget. The banners aided the church in collecting the renovation funds.

Archers continue with an excellent working relationship with the church and its various departments and have since manufactured and installed all of the signage for each stage of the renovation over the previous 18 months. Archers is very much looking forward to finalising the internal signage and display graphics for the full re-opening in spring 2008.
